On the agricultural front, in the 1950s until independence in 1962, British Colonial Office policy encouraged the development of co- operatives for subsistence farmers to partially convert to selling their crops:
Principally coffee, cotton, tobacco and maize.
Today, Uganda is among the leading producers of coffee, bananas and oil seed crops (soya beans, sunflower, etc).
It is also a major producer of other crops like tea, cotton, organic cotton, tobacco, cereals, fresh foods and vegetables, nuts, essential oils, flowers, poultry and freshwater fish.
