Since the mid 1980’s, Uganda’s economy has moved from recovery to growth.
The GDP growth rate which had fallen to less than one percent in 1985/86 was restored in 1986/87 to 3.9% & has since then continued to grow at an average rate of 6.2%.
Similarly, poverty incidence has decreased to 20.3% in 2019/20 from 33.8% in
1998/99.
In line with the principle of structural transformation, the share of agriculture sector in GDP declined from over 45.9% in 1981/82 to about 27.1% in 2020/21.
The employment share of agriculture has declined by 11 percentage points while that of the services sector has increased by 2.5 percentage points.
